If you think that burlesque isn’t political, you are wrong. Many performers use their art as a form of activism, raising awareness about social issues and advocating for change.

Fan dancing especially has been a powerful symbol of progress for women and marginalized groups. With roots in various cultures, the burlesque prop became popular in the United States during the early 1930s. As the stars of the day fought — from cabaret to courtroom — against societal norms, challenging perceptions of femininity and sexuality, the public began to accept and embrace the value of their art.

Burlesque is no stranger to the ongoing struggle for equality and representation. Being more inclusive to the diversity of bodies, races and sexual identities that truly make our world complete has not come easy. But we cannot turn back and should continue to use this platform to influence individuals and mainstream culture towards acceptance.

To the burlesque fan dancers around the world, I encourage you to embrace your performances as activism. Hold your position, embrace your power and express your value.
